Veggie Mom in Texas Can't Post - Sign Up!

Hello everyone!

I am a 32 year-old mom of two, Liliana (5) and Alex (1 1/2). I was a vegetarian for about 5 years in in my late teens and early twenties but then had to start eating meat again due to anemia (I have since figured out that meat was not actually the answer). However, due to a number of factors, primarily health and animal treatment, I returned to vegetarianism a month ago and am trying to feed my children the same plant based diet. For the most part my children really loved it. Unfortunately, living in Texas with a meat-eating family does not make vegetarianism easy; my mother and husband have been particularly reticent when it comes to the kids. I was excited to discover this group and hope to learn more ways to share this lifestyle with my children.

Thanks!

Amber

Hi. Amber. I'm glad you found us! There is lots of great info on here. I was vegetarian for many years, but didn't even think about nutrition until I was pregnant. Now my daughter is 5 1/2 and I am raising her vegetarian. I am very close to a vegan diet at this point and I have learned so much about nutrition. One of the things that surprises me again and again is how little people know about this critical topic!

Any concerns your family has are certainly rooted in a lack of understanding about nutrition. Two super books to read are Becoming Vegetarian by Vesanto Melina and Brenda Davis and Raising Vegetarian Children by Joanne Stepaniak and Vesanto Melina. Great info that will help you put their minds at ease, plus give you confidence that you are covering all your bases.

Congrats on your decision and see you around!
